Biden and Harris hold discussions with CEOs regarding risks associated with artificial intelligence

US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have held a meeting with top executives from Google, Microsoft, and other AI companies to address the risks associated with artificial intelligence. The Biden administration aims to ensure that AI technology advances without compromising people's rights and safety. The growing popularity of AI tools, including the ChatGPT chatbot, has led to increased investment in AI technology capable of generating human-like text, images, music, and code. However, concerns have been raised globally regarding job displacement, deception, and the spread of disinformation.

During the meeting, President Biden emphasized the need to mitigate the risks posed by AI to individuals, society, and national security. The discussions revolved around the importance of transparency in AI systems, evaluating their safety, and protecting them from malicious attacks. To further support AI research, the administration has announced a $140 million investment in establishing seven new AI research institutes. Additionally, the White House Office of Management and Budget is expected to issue guidance on the use of AI tools by federal agencies.

While the meeting aimed to address current AI development risks, it also highlighted the moral responsibility of companies in safeguarding society from potential dangers. Vice President Harris emphasized the importance of complying with existing laws and ensuring the safety and security of AI products. Some companies have faced criticism for the lack of transparency in their AI systems' training data, which can lead to biased or false responses and copyright concerns.

AI companies are facing increased scrutiny not only from the US government but also from European authorities. The EU is finalizing regulations that would place the bloc at the forefront of global AI standards. The focus has expanded to encompass general-purpose AI systems, leading to proposed requirements for disclosing copyrighted material used in training. Europe has temporarily banned ChatGPT due to privacy breaches, and the UK competition watchdog has initiated a review of the AI market.

The discussions between the US administration and AI industry leaders reflect the need to balance AI advancements with ethical considerations, privacy protection, and regulation to address potential risks and ensure the responsible development and deployment of AI technology.
